KELLOGG W K FOUNDATION TRUST Profile
The W. K. Kellogg Foundation Trust is a nonprofit charity organization that is based out of Battle Creek. The foundation provides the majority of funding to the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and was founded by the namesake W. K. Kellog. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation itself was founded in 1930 by Will Keith Kellogg and was originally known as the W. K. Kellogg Child Welfare Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to “support children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society.” The company began with annual spending on charities of $26,000, which would grow to over $4.4 million by 1955.The foundation has grown from its $66 million inception to become the seventh largest philanthropic foundation in the United States. The foundation mainly spends its assets in the United States, which alone makes up over three quarters of its asset allocations, and spends the remaining amount in an equal split between southern Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1996, the foundation would supply a multiyear grant to the Pan American Health Organization that would cover over a third of a billion people in Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation has continued to expand its reach and now provides a variety of grants in the United States, Mexico, Haiti, northeastern Brazil and southern Africa. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation Trust invests almost exclusively in the consumer staples sector, which alone makes up over 90% of its total asset allocations, although it also allocates a small portion of its held assets in the finance sector. The trust invests mainly in the Kellogg Company, its original parent company, and allocates its remaining assets in the iShares S&P 100 Index Fund.
