The report covers the 2023 reporting year and is the first American Water Sustainability Report to be published in its new annual cadence.

American Water prepared the Sustainability Report with reference to the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, and includes applicable metrics from the Edison Electric Institute and American Gas Association ESG/sustainability reporting template. The report also takes into consideration the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the company’s responses to the annual CDP Climate Change questionnaire.
The report focuses on key areas including:
- Water Quality & Emerging Contaminants; Water & Wastewater Infrastructure; Water Use & Efficiency; Inclusion, Diversity & Equity; Employee Health; Safety and Well-being; Water Access & Affordability; Talent Attraction, Development & Retention; Water Supply Resilience; and Emissions, which reflect the Company’s most recent Materiality Assessment results.
- Based upon input collected from shareholder outreach and feedback over the last year, also included are new disclosures utilizing existing internal strategies and expertise spanning: Biodiversity, Environmental Justice, Human Rights, Pay Equity, Water Quality Regulation and Wastewater topics
