OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Discusses AI's Impact on Employment

In a recent interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed the notion that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to massive unemployment and urged students to embrace and learn this technology.

During the interview with Indeed CEO Chris Hyams, Altman expressed confidence that there will be plenty of jobs in the future, although many will look different from today. He believes that while some jobs may change, there will still be numerous opportunities. He advised students concerned about AI taking over their jobs to focus on learning how to use the technology.

Altman cited computer programming as an example, noting that the technology was popular when he was in school but is significantly different today. He mentioned that the perception of computer programming then mirrors current views on AI, with many similarities.

Altman emphasized his eagerness to learn during his student days, highlighting computer programming as a positive force. Although it eliminated some jobs, it enabled many new opportunities and capabilities.

Altman's optimistic outlook contrasts sharply with the views of Silicon Valley investor Vinod Khosla, who predicts AI will replace 80% of tasks in 80% of jobs. Khosla cautions that, unlike previous technological changes, workers may not be able to simply upgrade their skills to avoid unemployment.

However, a recent study by Indeed found over 2,800 job skills and concluded that none are "highly likely" to be replaced by AI. Indeed's chief economist Svenja Gudell acknowledged that some people might lose jobs due to tech advancements but stressed that current AI technology still cannot replace humans in roles like warehouse work.
