Apple (AAPL, Financial) is conducting internal research into existing market products as it considers entering the smart glasses arena, following in the footsteps of Meta Platforms. Sources reveal that a project, codenamed "Atlas," began collecting feedback from Apple employees on smart glasses. Plans are in place to expand focus groups soon. The project is being led by Apple's product systems quality team, which is part of the hardware engineering department.

A team email sent to employees at Apple's Cupertino headquarters stressed the importance of testing and developing products that everyone will love. Employees are being recruited for user research on current smart glasses in the market as part of this effort.

Apple typically convenes secret focus groups to gauge perceptions of existing products when considering new product lines. The company often relies on employee feedback to maintain confidentiality in its planning stages. An Apple representative declined to comment on the research.

The latest developments indicate Apple is advancing its own smart glasses project. While previous reports suggested that Apple might enter the market and potentially challenge Meta's Ray-Ban device, an actual product release could still be several years away.
