Amazon's (AMZN, Financial) cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), has announced a significant expansion in Italy with a planned investment of €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) over the next five years. This strategic move aims to enhance its data center operations within the country as part of its broader effort to strengthen cloud services across Europe.
Since launching its first cloud region in Italy in 2020, AWS anticipates that its investment will reach €2 billion by 2029, according to reports. The company plans to bolster its data center presence in Milan, which is expected to support up to 5,500 jobs across AWS’s data center supply chain by 2029. Job opportunities will span across construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and broader local economic activities.
In May, AWS was in negotiations with the Italian government to invest billions of euros to further expand its business footprint in Italy. The company’s local clientele includes notable names such as luxury car manufacturer Ferrari (RACE) and insurance firm Assicurazioni Generali.
AWS's expansion efforts are not limited to Italy. In May, Amazon also announced a €15.7 billion investment in data centers in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain and a future investment of €7.8 billion in Germany by 2040.
