Intel (INTC, Financial) executives acknowledged the potential sale of its chip manufacturing business if the upcoming 18A chip technology fails. At a Barclays conference in San Francisco, interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus discussed the importance of integrating manufacturing and design for the success of the new technology. Holthaus questioned the practicality of separating the two functions entirely, while Zinsner, also CFO, explained Intel's efforts to operate the manufacturing unit as an independent subsidiary. This includes creating separate financial and operational systems, with an independent operating committee. The complete separation of the unit remains an unresolved issue.
