Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced a 10% reduction in senior management roles to enhance efficiency. This move aims to simplify operations and improve productivity. Some positions have been transitioned to non-management roles, while others have been eliminated altogether. Over the past two years, Google has been striving to increase efficiency, including a historic layoff of 12,000 employees in early 2023.
This initiative comes as Google faces challenges from AI competitors like OpenAI, which threaten its dominant search business. In response, Google has integrated generative AI features into its core operations and launched new AI tools, including a video generator and a suite of Gemini models.
During a recent meeting, Pichai also redefined "Googleyness" to better align with modern values, emphasizing mission-driven work, beneficial products, accountability, resilience, enjoyment in challenges, and teamwork. This reflects Google's effort to adapt to the evolving tech landscape and corporate culture.
