Revealing an investment of $11 billion to improve its infrastructure in Georgia, Amazon's (AMZN, Financials) Amazon Web Services positioned the state as a center for sophisticated artificial intelligence and cloud computing and New data centers in Butts and Douglas counties are part of the plan and should provide hundreds of technical jobs including network experts, security professionals, and data center engineers.
The news follows AWS's ten-year presence in Georgia, where the firm claims to have helped the state's economy grow $18.5 billion since 2010. Over the years, AWS believes its activities have supported 44,700 indirect employment and 34,000 direct ones. With thousands of local building and supply chain employment among other major economic value additions, the current investment is expected to be very beneficial.
Saying the investment will be transforming for the area, Georgia's governor, state authorities, and local leaders welcomed it. Emphasizing the high-paying employment and technical innovations the development would bring to the region, Douglas County Commission Chairwoman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones said the development is a "game-changer."
Apart from employment generating, AWS's growth emphasizes its dedication to sustainability and education. To support STEM education, the business intends to launch initiatives such as Think Big Spaces and Girls' Tech Day. Eight solar farms spread among the state's renewable energy projects will provide carbon-free electricity comparable to the demands of 123,000 U.S. houses yearly.
By means of its logistics and technology, AWS has also helped Georgia with disaster assistance. Among the noteworthy contributions are delivery of over 2.3 million basic supplies during hurricanes Helene and Milton and drone mapping and energy systems to support search-and-rescue efforts.
The investment is the biggest in the history of the Butts County Board of Commissioners, according to Russ Crumbley, chairman. He pointed out the cooperative efforts of local authorities to safeguard the project, which should eventually help companies and communities.
AWS underlined that its data centers are designed to accommodate many workloads, including models driven by GPU-powered artificial intelligence and machine learning.
