Tesla is reportedly realigning its production teams at the Austin Gigafactory, shifting some employees from the Cybertruck to the Model Y production line. This change comes as Tesla faces a rare decline in its annual delivery numbers, with approximately 1.79 million vehicles delivered in 2024, marking a 1% decrease from the previous year.
The Model Y, Tesla's best-selling model, remains a priority. An internal survey conducted in December indicated that employees were informed about the production adjustments and asked for their job preferences. The survey highlighted that changes in the production schedule for both the Model Y and Cybertruck were necessary to better meet business demands.
According to employees, such adjustments in existing model production are uncommon and usually occur only with new models. It was revealed in meetings with supervisors that the Cybertruck team will be downsized in the first quarter of 2025, with a reduction in parts production for this model.
These changes are expected to take effect soon. While many employees prefer to stay with the Cybertruck team, some have been reassigned, possibly due to the higher profit margins of the Model Y. Despite high pre-launch reservation numbers for the Cybertruck, market demand remains uncertain, with deliveries falling short of expectations. Tesla has not disclosed specific sales figures for the Cybertruck, but government documents indicate approximately 27,000 units were delivered in 2024.
