Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financial) is considering expanding its news platform to more countries, currently serving 125 million monthly readers in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Australia. The tech giant aims to strengthen its influence in digital news, boosting publisher revenue and improving advertising effectiveness.

The platform, launched nearly a decade ago, plays a significant role in shaping the content consumed by millions in Western countries daily. Apple News offers free and paid versions, featuring curated stories from newspapers, magazines, games, podcasts, and newsletters.

Since its launch five years ago, the paid version, Apple News+, has grown from supporting 300 publications to over 450 worldwide. It charges $12.99 per month in the U.S. and £12.99 in the UK.

Publishers face a potential risk of Apple eroding the customer base willing to pay directly for their content.
