Hello, this is Joe Shoen in Phoenix, Arizona. Today, we're going to talk to you a little bit about U-Haul trailers. Trailers, as you probably know, is how U-Haul started. We didn't really even get into the truck business until 1958. So from 1945 to 1958, our business was exclusively trailers, and trailers still play a large part in our business. This year, we will probably do over 3 million trailer transactions. And we will probably do over 1.4 million transactions with equipment designed to tow the customers' car behind a vehicle.
At the end of the war in June of 1945, my mother and father and their young baby needed to go from Corona, California to Portland, Oregon. They had a '40 Ford Tudor. It wasn't big enough to carry everything they wanted. So the entire ride home, they discussed offering a trailer rental service so other people similarly situated wouldn't have to give away their possessions, which is what my parents did.
